When American’s feel their civil liberties have been compromised they make sure the powers that be know about it. There is no better example of this, then the determination being shown to legalise online poker in the U.S., following the Bush Administration’s passing of a bill that effectively banned it in 2006.
Since Obama’s inauguration as President of the United States, he has been constantly hounded to abolish the UIGEA bill that stops payment processors transferring money to online gambling accounts.
This month, Rep. Barney Frank, introduced legislation that would essentially repeal the ban by instituting a framework for licensing and regulating online gaming activites.
It has also come to light that “poker” was one of the top 10 things to change on an online poll set up by the Whitehouse, following the changeover of President. This website was flooded with requests from poker players from all round the U.S. to address the rules about playing online poker.
John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, said: “The onslaught is a reminder that the poker community is strong, growing, active and paying attention to what Washington is doing on this issue.”
In total, more than 125,000 users suggested 44,000 ideas to the White House. They presented 1.4 million votes for their favorite ideas. Each supportive vote earned 10 points.
The subject of legalising online poker earned 46,890 points, more than increasing automotive fuel efficiency standards (46,120).
The momentum gathering behind the legalising online poker will have to be addressed quite soon, otherwise the Obama Administration could be caught up in a bitter war with an ever increasing number of vocal poker players.
